About The Teaching Experience

The Teaching Experience represents the vision of Amber Passey that educators need a place to come together to share their experiences and to continue professional development. To accomplish this goal, The Teaching Experience hosts the podcast, "Teaching Strategies for the Everyday Teacher" produced by our own Tenacious Teacher. This podcast provides quick strategies that can be implemented easily in any classroom. Visit the Tenacious Teacher's podcast to find transcripts and to listen to the podcast. You can also subscribe to the podcast via Tenacious Teacher - Teaching Strategies for the Everyday Teacher. Another project that helps accomplish the goal of bringing educators together is "The Reading Corner," a podcast of short reading selections accompanied by activities based on the readings the students listen to. Any questions or comments can be emailed to info@theteachingexperience.com.

Amber Passey

a.k.a. the Tenacious Teacher

Education
Amber graduated from Brigham Young University in 2002 with a B.S. in Marriage, Family, and Human Development. She then completed an M.A. from the University of Utah in Applied Linguistics in 2005.

Undergraduate Level Teaching

Amber has been teaching since she entered college. She began as a tutor for a genreal education science course. She tutored students one-on-one and in small groups. She also experienced managing her own classroom and giving lecture-style test reviews to large groups (from 300-1,000). Prior to finishing her bachelor’s degree she taught free English classes in Bulgaria as a volunteer missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She most often taught the grammar classes. She fell in love with English grammar and with teaching. Her class size grew from 10-15 students to over 50 students some weeks. She felt like she had truly found her passion in life; however, she didn’t discover the field of linguistics until her final semester of college. By then it was too late to change her major. Instead, she decided to pursue a master’s degree in applied linguistics.

Graduate Level Teaching

During her master’s program she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at the University of Utah. She taught advanced grammar one semester, but she mainly focused on teaching academic writing.

Post-Graduate Teaching

After graduation she taught at Eagle Gate College in Salt Lake City, Utah in their intensive English program (IEP). Her classes mainly focused on teaching grammar and writing skills. Amber currently teaches in the ESL program at Utah Valley State College. Here Amber has continued teaching writing and grammar, but has also taught reading and listening and speaking.
